Choosing your localization approach

Companies historically have addressed localization requirements in several ways, from developing full in-house capability, to a mixture of in-house localization management with selective contracted support, to totally outsourced localization either by single language or multiple language vendors. As in any other in-sourcing vs. outsourcing decision, the company’s goals, configuration and unique situation have driven decision-making.

As the global marketplace has grown a number of highly qualified localization vendors have emerged. These firms are able to provide localization in virtually every language. Some specialize in specific countries or language groups, others offer worldwide services, and yet others are focused on specific vertical segments like Life Sciences, Legal, Financial, Manufacturing, etc.

In a very general sense, each company must devise a decision-making model about when to build internal capability versus when to rely on outsourced support. For firms currently using or considering using in-house resources, the goal of savings for the long-term should be considered and processes put in place to ensure that the effort of in-house resources can be leveraged in the future.
